From points, badges and leaderboards to event driven engagement engines

Gamification 1.0 was pretty cool. Tons of sales, bug, step and tree challenges got set up and proved that people plug into the core principles of points and badges. Hurrah!

But that was a different era. An era of relative comfort. Nothing was broke. Now it’s all breaking and we’re getting woke. Things are morphing fast as we fly through the COVID portal. Digital has become preeminent as we work from home, liking it or not. Some employees now demand to spend more time with friends, family and themselves and…

David Attenborough’s Witness Statement is a compelling read. He describes a set of one way gates, through which we are hurtling. From the other side there will be no return, behind us a toxic soup unlivable for us and much of the planet’s plants and animals. The planet will survive (its a rock) but not as the garden of Eden that we have enjoyed to date and which is slipping quickly through our fingers. …

Whilst health officials track, trace, lockdown and immunise, success is predicated on the population rallying around a set of behaviours and feeling good about these. People are getting worn out. This is exacerbated by much of the narrative being controlled by those who have no interest in the truth, but rather power. Social media leaves many of us feeling compelled to be an expert on things we have no expertise in as we battle to win and be right as opposed to getting…

The world has changed in a way and at a speed we have never seen. We have never been here before. We don’t really know what’s ahead of us though it appears that for the next 3–4 months there will be significant health and economic impacts across our communities globally.

It was Machiavelli who wrote, “Never waste the opportunity offered by a good crisis.” Machiavelli, understood that crises shake people out of their complacency, create opportunities to challenge conventional wisdom and give leaders some room to take on vested interests and achieve transformative change. Mckinsey’s article on the subject goes…

7 years ago Microsoft was struggling under Ballmer to shift to the cloud, migrating not only its full technology stack but also and more challenging it’s commercial model, including it’s internal compensation model; how the reps were paid. MS Office tucked up in an “Enterprise Agreement” was King and no one had the courage to cannibalize it. …
